Start on the right paw for a lifetime of love
Let us get really serious about something really fun. June is “Adopt a Shelter Cat Month!” Your local animal shelters are filled with healthy, happy animals…not the abused and neglected souls in those sad fundraising commercials. Now that we’re all on the same page…let’s move on.
There are lots of reasons! The kids are home for the summer, making it a great time for your new purr pal to bond with the whole family. Whether your new cat wakes up in bed with you in the morning, finds your lap for a mid-day nap, or snuggles on the couch while you watch television, everybody gets quality kitty time with the newest member of the family.
Another reason is that there are so doggone many of them available. Kitten season is in full swing by late spring and early summer.
Really? Even here in San Diego?Adoption
Yep. While we are a leading city when it comes to animal welfare, there’s still work to do. Put your best paw forward by adopting a shelter cat. Your cat or kitten will be spayed, neutered, vaccinated, examined for good health and micro-chipped for identification.
June is also a terrific time to adopt an adult cat. Jim Silveira, President of Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas, tells a pet’s life magazine, “Families overlook adult cats when we have lots of kittens. We want them to keep in mind that they are only kittens for a short time. The true blessing is that your kitten will become a cat that will give you a lifetime of love.”
One cat lover reminds us, “It’s an honor to earn the love of an older pet.” Older cats very quickly become old friends. There is something so comfortable and reassuring about them. Many shelters, including Rancho Coastal Humane Society, have incentives for senior citizens who adopt senior pets.
Adopting a shelter cat may not be as “glamorous” as picking one from a dirty cardboard box in a parking lot. But when you adopt a shelter cat this June you’ll be starting on the right paw for a lifetime of love.
