It’s official!

San Diego Humane Society.

On July 1, 2018 San Diego Humane Society began providing animal services to six more cities: Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, San Diego, Santee and Solana Beach. This is one of the biggest milestones for animal welfare in San Diego. San Diego Humane Society will now be able to offer expanded service hours, advanced veterinary care, behavior modification and intake diversion programs to keep our entire community’s pets with their families and out of the shelters.

What does this mean for pet owners?

Most San Diegans will now have a single animal service provider. This will decrease confusion about where to turn for animal-related inquiries and also shorten the length of time it takes to search multiple shelters when your pet becomes lost. It also means that the entire county will have access to our specialized lifesaving programs.

These programs include:

  • Expanded adoption services, humane law enforcement and specialty programs like the Kitten Nursery, Behavior Center, PAWS San Diego and community outreach
  • Double the number of employees serving these six communities – now nearly 500 staff
  • Additional support of 5,400 volunteers
  • Expanded service hours and coverage - seven days a week!

Now most of the 45,000 animals entering San Diego shelters each year, as well as the wildlife in our region, will be in the safety and care of San Diego Humane Society. Our community took a stand for animals and the safety of our animals will forever be changed – and better – as a result.
